Come From Away – The True Story

Two rather hapless minor characters from Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, tell their story. The complexities of life keep them perpetually confused.  A humorous, yet thoughtful look at  human existence.

Directed by Micha Marie Stevens

The Gin Game

By Donald L. Coburn, and featuring beloved Denton actors Buster and Cindy Maloney.

Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey, two elderly residents meet at home for senior citizens, where they begin playing a series of Gin games that Fonsia always wins. Weller’s inability to win a single hand becomes increasingly frustrating to him, while Fonsia becomes increasingly confident.

Tea For Three: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty

By Eric H. Weinberger and Elaine Bromka

Both humorous and moving, this work offers a peek into the hopes, fears, frustrations, and loves of Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon and Betty Ford. Jen Peace portrays these fascinating characters in three separate scenes that take place in the family quarters of the White House just before the end of living there as the wife of a president.  Each of the women confide about their unique experiences leading up to and during their work in what Pat Nixon called, “the hardest unpaid job in the world.”

Always…Patsy Cline

Created and originally directed by Ted Swindley – based on a true story

The show is based on a true story about Cline and her friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical play, complete with down home country humor, includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as “Crazy”, “I Fall to Pieces”, “SweetDreams” and “Walking After Midnight”…27 songs in all. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.”

Macbeth and Twelfth Night

Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself.

Twelfth Night: Shipwrecked twins Viola and Sebastian are lost among love-sick aristocrats, unruly servants, mischievous pleasure seekers, clowns, and a puritan. With music as the bittersweet “food of love,” all converge and conspire in this comic journey.

Located in the Black Box Theatre inside the Golden Triangle Mall (now located by Silver Cinemas down the Dillards wing).

Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream

We hope you’ll join us as our students show off all the skills they’ve worked on for the past four weeks.

Julius Caesar:
Caesar returns in triumph to Rome and the people pour out of their homes to celebrate. Alarmed by the autocrat’s popularity, the educated elite conspire to bring him down. After his assassination, civil war erupts on the streets of Rome.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream:
Out of this wood do not desire to go. Mismatched lovers, a group of actors, fairies, and their King and Queen are in the forest. Paths cross, so do lovers, and in the end, all’s well that ends well.

Matilda

Based on the popular childrens’ book by Roald Dahl, Matilda the Musical is a fantastical journey that follows one extraordinary little girl as she impresses her teacher, befriends her classmates, outsmarts her headmistress, and finally stands up to her unloving parents and proves her worth.

Matilda Wormwood is incredibly clever for her age – perhaps too clever. Her television-obsessed parents are always yelling at her to stop reading those books of hers, and her father even refuses to acknowledge that she’s a girl instead of the boy he wanted, so she spends her time at the local library regaling the librarian with fascinating stories that seem to come from out of nowhere. But things begin to change when it’s time for her to enroll in school, and she meets Miss Honey, a kind and supportive teacher that recognizes how special Matilda is.

It’s only with their backs against the wall under the thumb of the dreaded headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, that Matilda realizes she has a particular gift that no one else seems to have. When she discovers that the story she’s been telling to the librarian is much more than just a story, she concludes that the dark secret at the heart of it might actually be the key to saving everyone from the torturous clutches of The Trunchbull.

People of all ages will connect with this heartwarming musical, so it’s a perfect night out for the whole family. Millennials especially, though, will enjoy the nostalgic trip down memory lane as they recall the beloved movie from their childhood. From the same generation, director Kristen Ray brings her own passion for the story in a way that both honors Matilda’s history while still keeping it fresh and relevant. A stellar cast and crew rounds out the experience for what will be a memorable evening.

A Doll’s House

Set in nineteenth century Norway, Ibsen’s A Doll’s House focuses on the married life of banker Torvald Helmer and his wife Nora. A young middle-class couple with three small children, their seemingly respectable marriage is revealed to be a broken and bloodless matter.

ELF

This delightful modern holiday classic features Buddy, a young orphan who managed to crawl into Santa’s bag and ended up being raised as an elf at the North Pole. As he realizes that he is a human, rather than an elf, he travels to New York City to find his real identity.  He ends up helping his birth family remember the true meaning of Christmas.  Fun for ages 4 to 104.

Poster for the production, "ELF The Musical".

We've seen several slows at this theater and have always enjoyed them. The acting has always been good and the sets and costumes are well done. The theater itself is well designed so you won't get a bad seat. I do recommend arriving early as it is tricky to find parking.

I saw Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (CATCF) at Theater Denton on Sunday. What a fun way to spend a couple of hours on a hot summer day. Cool theater off the square. Much of it in its original glory. The over all production was fantastic. The singing, acting and the MUSIC 🎵, all exceeded my expectations. The music was exceptional. Such talented artists. A friend of mine played violin in the performance. She played beautifully. I was actually moved to tears during the show as I was transported back to fond memories of my youth, and to my childhood memories of CATCF. Our seats were perfect for viewing characters across the stage. I didn’t see a bad seat (obstructed) in the house. Parking - Denton can be tricky, especially The Square, and weekends. Come early so you’re not stressing over finding a spot (like I did). They sell snacks and beverages (alcoholic & nonalcoholic) at the concession store. They take cash and credit cards. There’s a cute little WONKA CANDY SHOP spot for photo ops inside the lounge. Candy props and all! Final thought- I expected the theater to be freezing inside. It wasn’t. It was cool enough inside to make me forget about the extreme heat outside. ☺️ This was my first time attending a show at Theater Denton. I’m looking forward to the upcoming shows I’ll see next.

My husband and I enjoyed the production of Jesus Christ SuperStar. Wonderful community production with an extremely talented cast! We also loved the historical theater and the vintage vibe. Free parking was easier to find than we expected!

We love seeing shows at Campus as well as at the Annex at the mall. I would recommend y'all set up a separate Google listing for your mall location with location details for out of towners. Specifically letting them know about the back door entrance & parking. It will go a long way in getting the word out about entertainment options on that side of town if it pops up in google & map searches!
