2010-11 Season

2010-11 Season

The Importance of Being Earnest

By Oscar Wilde

A classic comedic farce set in late Victorian England. When Jack, also known as Ernest, reveals his double life to his aristocratic best friend, Algernon, Algernon reveals his similar duplicity to avoid social obligations. Add in the young ladies that the young men wish to marry, their chaperones and the foibles and hypocrisy of society it all adds up to Oscar Wilde’s most enduringly popular play.

Director – Michael Bolen

The Mystery of Edwin Drood

By Rupert Holmes

The story was inspired by Charles Dickens’ last (and unfinished) novel and employs the device of a “show-within- a-show” The cast members of Drood do not specifically play Dickens’s characters, but rather music hall performers who are performing as Dickens’s characters. This device allowed for a great deal of light comedy that was not originally found in Dickens’s novel. The Chairman, a kind of Master of Ceremonies, begins by informing attendees that this is going to be an unusual production and the play within a play commences.

The final twist is that the each audience votes on the ending, so theatre goers never know how the evening will turn out.

Directors – Brad Speck & Jim Laney

All In The Timing

By David Ives

For DCT’s inaugural production at the POINTBank Black Box Theatre Bill Kirkley suggested David Ives’ All in the Timing which features six short plays. Six Plays…Six Directors…Six Visions…Six Casts…One Playwright…equals a singularly exceptional show! Although Kirkley headed up the project and directed The Philadelphia (one of the six plays), he shared the fun by recruiting directors for the remaining five pieces within the work.

Additional directors on this project included DCT veterans Bonnie McCormick directing Sure Thing; Dennis Welch directing Variations on the Death of Trotsky , Kenny Fudge directing The Universal Language; Polly Maynard directing Philip Glass Buys A Loaf Of Bread; along with newcomers Bob White and Jerri Hall directing Words, Words, Words.

An Evening with Tennessee Williams

The event offered a rare look at some of Williams’ lesser known works.

This Property is Condemned, directed by Brad Speck is a depression-era drama.
The Lady of Larkspur Lotion, directed by Dennis Welch, is a lighter offering that takes a look at the lives of three people in a cockroach-infested boarding house in the French Quarter.
Talk To Me Like The Rain And Let Me Listen, directed by Pat Watson is an intense work featuring a young man and young woman who speak eloquently about their desperation.

That’s Life

We've seen several slows at this theater and have always enjoyed them. The acting has always been good and the sets and costumes are well done. The theater itself is well designed so you won't get a bad seat. I do recommend arriving early as it is tricky to find parking.

I saw Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (CATCF) at Theater Denton on Sunday. What a fun way to spend a couple of hours on a hot summer day. Cool theater off the square. Much of it in its original glory. The over all production was fantastic. The singing, acting and the MUSIC 🎵, all exceeded my expectations. The music was exceptional. Such talented artists. A friend of mine played violin in the performance. She played beautifully. I was actually moved to tears during the show as I was transported back to fond memories of my youth, and to my childhood memories of CATCF. Our seats were perfect for viewing characters across the stage. I didn’t see a bad seat (obstructed) in the house. Parking - Denton can be tricky, especially The Square, and weekends. Come early so you’re not stressing over finding a spot (like I did). They sell snacks and beverages (alcoholic & nonalcoholic) at the concession store. They take cash and credit cards. There’s a cute little WONKA CANDY SHOP spot for photo ops inside the lounge. Candy props and all! Final thought- I expected the theater to be freezing inside. It wasn’t. It was cool enough inside to make me forget about the extreme heat outside. ☺️ This was my first time attending a show at Theater Denton. I’m looking forward to the upcoming shows I’ll see next.

We love seeing shows at Campus as well as at the Annex at the mall. I would recommend y'all set up a separate Google listing for your mall location with location details for out of towners. Specifically letting them know about the back door entrance & parking. It will go a long way in getting the word out about entertainment options on that side of town if it pops up in google & map searches!
