2008-09 Season

Arsenic and Old Lace

Drama Critic, Mortimer Brewster, is horrified to discover that his sweet, elderly aunts’ charity work actually consists of poisoning elderly bachelors that they deem to be suffering from loneliness. Throw in one uncle who thinks he is Theodore Roosevelt and another who is a vicious killer trying to escape the police and you have a frantically fun comedy.

1776

In pursuit of life, liberty and happiness, a family of 13 American colonies become struggle to become one country. This musical comedy tells the story of the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Perhaps not entirely historically accurate, this work does bring the colorful personalities and events surrounding our nation’s birth to joyful life.

Anna in the Tropics

Before the days of mechanization in the cigar making industry, a Cuban family brings their business and traditions to Florida. One such tradition is to have someone, called a lector, read to the workers as they roll the cigars. When a new lector is hired and reads the novel Anna Karenina to them, their lives are forever changed. This powerful drama won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize.

Carousel

The serious themes of societal prejudices between classes, hypocrisy, and domestic violence are not often featured in American musicals, but this haunting piece explores the darker side of life, love, and ultimately, redemption and hope for a better future, for members of two families in 1870’s New England. This memorable story is told with both beautiful imagery and powerful music.

Don’t Dress for Dinner

A classic French bedroom farce where nothing goes quite as planned. Bernard, married to Jacqueline, is having an a affair with Suzanne, not Suzette. His good friend Robert is having an affair with Jacqueline. Suzette is the caterer pretending to have an affair with Robert and Suzanne is a model pretending to be the caterer. A laugh riot from beginning to end!

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

A rollicking good time is had when in 1850’s Oregon six backwoods brothers decide they will kidnap the women that they have chosen to marry. Their married brother goes along with the plan, much to the consternation of his wife and the ladies they kidnap. Trapped in the woods for the winter, the furious women make the men stay out in the barn. This energetic musical ends happily by springtime, however, when love fills the air for all.

Went to see Carrie the Musical. Very talented group, and I loved the theatre itself.

We've seen several slows at this theater and have always enjoyed them. The acting has always been good and the sets and costumes are well done. The theater itself is well designed so you won't get a bad seat. I do recommend arriving early as it is tricky to find parking.

I saw Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (CATCF) at Theater Denton on Sunday. What a fun way to spend a couple of hours on a hot summer day. Cool theater off the square. Much of it in its original glory. The over all production was fantastic. The singing, acting and the MUSIC 🎵, all exceeded my expectations. The music was exceptional. Such talented artists. A friend of mine played violin in the performance. She played beautifully. I was actually moved to tears during the show as I was transported back to fond memories of my youth, and to my childhood memories of CATCF. Our seats were perfect for viewing characters across the stage. I didn’t see a bad seat (obstructed) in the house. Parking - Denton can be tricky, especially The Square, and weekends. Come early so you’re not stressing over finding a spot (like I did). They sell snacks and beverages (alcoholic & nonalcoholic) at the concession store. They take cash and credit cards. There’s a cute little WONKA CANDY SHOP spot for photo ops inside the lounge. Candy props and all! Final thought- I expected the theater to be freezing inside. It wasn’t. It was cool enough inside to make me forget about the extreme heat outside. ☺️ This was my first time attending a show at Theater Denton. I’m looking forward to the upcoming shows I’ll see next.

My husband and I enjoyed the production of Jesus Christ SuperStar. Wonderful community production with an extremely talented cast! We also loved the historical theater and the vintage vibe. Free parking was easier to find than we expected!

We love seeing shows at Campus as well as at the Annex at the mall. I would recommend y'all set up a separate Google listing for your mall location with location details for out of towners. Specifically letting them know about the back door entrance & parking. It will go a long way in getting the word out about entertainment options on that side of town if it pops up in google & map searches!
