Towards Zero Auditions

June 10 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

By Agatha Christie
Aug. 2, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11
Director – Vanessa Welch & Ash Robbins

*Trigger Warning for material: Depression, suicide, and homicide

When a house party gathers at Gull’s Point, the seaside home of Lady Tressilian, Neville Strange finds himself caught between his former wife Audrey and his new flame, Kay. A nail-biting thriller, the play probes the psychology of jealousy in the shadow of a savage and brutal murder. The play is a layered drama of piercing intelligence that forces the audience to guess who will be murdered before they can even begin to untangle who did it.

This version of Towards Zero is the only play written by Agatha Christie under commission (to the Shuberts of New York). It only ran for one week in Martha’s Vineyard in 1945. It was lost to time until rediscovered by Julius Green in 2015 as part of his research for the history of Christie’s life. While the second version of the play (cowritten with Gerald Verner in 1951) is exceedingly more popular, Christie’s original is a far more ambitious and dramatic piece of writing.

Christie’s script follows her formula of plotting with a surprise outcome, but she paid special attention to characterization and motivation. Not only staged outdoors, the show delves deep into the psyche of its characters exploring thematically the notions of mortality, suicide, depression and even redemption.

Cast Breakdown

Casting will be gender and race neutral. Age ranges of the characters are listed, but actors of a different age may play the characters if they can do so convincingly. We are looking for actors who can best embody the characters’ subtleties and complexities. Much of the show depends on the “unsaid” and is as much character-driven as plot-driven. Actors will be asked to lean into their characters to deepen the mystery and tension.

  • O’Donnell (character age 40+/Irish accent) Irish butler/maid keeper of the grounds
  • Thomas Royde (character age 30-40/Standard British dialect) A stolid man and longtime friend of Neville and Audrey. Has always taken a backseat to Neville.
  • Kay Strange (character age 25-30/Standard British or American dialect) The new sassy flame of Neville. Is jealous of Neville’s attention toward Audrey and the entire situation.
  • Neville Strange (character age 30-40/Standard British dialect) A successful pro tennis player. Athletic. Life has always come easy for him.
  • Lady Tressilian (character age 65+) Older autocratic lady of society. The owner of Gull’s Point and  host of the gathering.
  • Janet (Collie) Collier (character age 35+/Standard British dialect) Trusted companion/servant to Lady Tressilian
  • MacGregor (character age 35+) stern Scottish maid
  • Audrey Strange (character age 30-40/Standard British dialect) misunderstood introvert who suffers in silence. Ophelia-like character. Neville’s first wife.
  • Angus McWhirter (character age 35+/Scottish dialect) A mysterious man who often walks the paths around Gull’s Point.
  • Peter Da Costa (character age 25-35/American dialect or open to working with actor on another dialect) charismatic gigolo friend of Kay
  • Inspector Leach (character age 50+/Standard British dialect)
  • Sergeant Harvey (character age 25+/Standard British dialect) Assistant investigator
  • Dr. Wilson (character age 35+/open to working with actor on dialect) Medical investigator

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Actors are allowed to prepare a dramatic monologue but are not required to do so. Please bring a headshot and resume (if you have one) and a list of all conflicts.

Most rehearsals will take place Monday through Thursday from 7:00-9:30 in Denton. The directors use a French Scene approach to rehearsal, so not all actors will be called every rehearsal. Some rehearsals may be held via Zoom if needed. There can be no conflicts after July 21st.
