Character Breakdown:

Josie: 28 per script. (Range 28-33) Irish farmer’s daughter. Tall with broad shoulders. Strong arms. Described by others as “big and strong as a bull”. Per the script “she is all woman” and “able to do the manual labor of two ordinary men.” Has a quick mind, a quick tongue, and a great sense of humour. She has a rough exterior and can be abrasive but is also extremely vulnerable. At her core she is exceptionally tender and gentle, loving and generous. A sensitive soul. We should see all of these layers of her in all things.

Phil Hogan: (Range 55-65) Irish farmer with a pronounced brogue. Medium height and build with a great amount of energy. Gruff manner. Is known for his temper and is often violent. Is also known for his great sense of humour. Has a quick mind and quick tongue. Loves trickery and deceit. Buried deep down is tenderness for his loved ones.

Jim Tyrone Jr.: (Range 35-45) Actor. Exudes charm. Educated, well spoken. Also has a quick mind and quick tongue. Enjoys a laugh but is consumed by self loathing. Fighting demons within himself, one being alcoholism. He has the ability to be perceptive and has moments of hope that always seem to lead to a crash. Jamie from A Long Day’s Journey into Night. There are layers of hurt in him.

T. Steadman Harder: (Range 30-45) Pretentious wealthy landowner. Exudes a superior air but is insecure beneath the surface. A bit of an oaf.

Mike Hogan: 20 years old (Range 18-25) Youngest son of Phil Hogan and brother of Josie Hogan, a “primly, self-righteous” young man with a “common Irish face,” immature, far too soft to hold his own with his father, runs away with the help of his sister Josie.
