Performances are June 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, & 16 at the Campus Theatre.

Winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award

About the show:

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. In the end, the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.

Roles available:

Lenny (30ish): The oldest McGrath sister, caretaker of her Granddaddy and everyone else, shy and not very worldly.

Meg (27ish): The middle McGrath sister, the black sheep of the family with a wild side. Left home to pursue a singing career but failed.

Babe (24ish): The youngest sister, vivacious and sunny on the outside, but deeply troubled on the inside. Out of jail on bail for shooting her abusive lawyer husband.

Chick (29ish): The sisters’ first cousin who has claimed her place in small town society and is very concerned with appearances.

Barnette (24-26ish): Babe’s lawyer, awkward and falling in love with Babe while trying to bring down her husband.

Doc Porter (27-30ish): Meg’s old boyfriend, quiet, stoic, walks with a slight limp due to an accident during a hurricane when he and Meg were sharing a wild encounter.
