Auditions – The Glass Menagerie

Denton Community Theatre is holding auditions for The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams. Auditions will be held at the Campus Theatre located at 214 W Hickory, Denton on Sunday October 21, and Monday October 22 at 7:00pm. This production is directed by Brad Speck.
Roles available for 2 women and 2 men. Tennessee Williams describes the characters in this way;
Amanda Wingfield (the mother, 40’s): A little woman of great but confused vitality, clinging frantically to another time and place. Her characterization must be carefully created, not copied from type. She is not paranoiac, but her life is paranoia. There is much to admire in Amanda, and as much to love and pity as there is to laugh at. Certainly she has endurance and a kind of heroism, and though her foolishness makes her unwittingly cruel at times, there is tenderness in her slight person. A southern accent is required.
Laura Wingfield (her daughter, early 20’s): Amanda, having failed to establish contact with reality, continues to live vitally in her illusions, but Laura’s situation is even graver. A childhood illness has left her crippled, one leg slightly shorter than the other, and held in a brace. This defect need not be more then suggested on the stage. Stemming from this, Laura’s separation increases till she is like a piece of her own glass collection, too exquisitely fragile to move from the shelf. A southern accent is required.
Tom Wingfield (her son, early 20’s): And the narrator of the play. A poet with a job in a warehouse. His nature is not remorseless, but to escape from a trap he has to act without pity. A southern accent is required.
Jim O’Connor (the gentleman caller, early 20’s): A nice, ordinary, young man.
If auditioners have a prepared monologue, they will be permitted to perform it. Otherwise auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
Allowances will be made for holiday schedules.
About the show: A touching family drama that centers around Tom, an aspiring poet who works in a warehouse, his mother Amanda and his painfully shy sister Laura. Tom longs to leave home for a life of adventure but stays to support his mother and sister. Mature subject matter.
Performances are January 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20 at the Campus Theatre.
