Audition – CATS

June 10, 2019 @ 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm

PREPARE 16-32 bars of a song similar to show style. BRING sheet music in correct key.

PREPARE 30-60 seconds of a dance solo in your strongest style. BRING music downloaded onto a tech device.

Resume and headshot appreciated but not necessary. Callbacks June 11.

Walk-ins will be worked into auditions where time permits.

About the Show:

Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber; Based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot; “Prologue – Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats” additional material written by Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe; ”Memory” additional material written by Trevor Nunn.

This popular musical has the Jellicle Cats sing their stories for their benevolent leader, Old Deuteronomy, to determine which will be chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.  The audience is introduced to each of the of the contenders and the rest of this colorful tribe at the Jellicle Ball. Performances are August 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 2019 at 7:30pm and August 11, 18, 2019 at 2:00pm at the Campus Theatre.   Directed by Ash Robbins.  Music Direction by John Norine.  Choreography by Nicole Probst.

Leads and Supporting:

Grizabella (no ens) – Mezzo (low range to F#3; belts to Eb5) (female – adult cat) Strong, experienced actress. Does not have to be a strong dancer. Moves slowly and carefully suggesting injury. Regret, rejection, and loneliness. A lost soul who struggles to maintain some dignity as she dreams about when she was young and beautiful. She is vulnerable but a survivor.

Jennyanydots – soprano (high range to F#5) Female – adult cat. Good mover and tapper. Comedic, Goofy. The eccentric aunt type.

Jellylorum/Griddlebone – Mezzo (low range to G#3; high range to E5) Female – adult cat. Dancer and tapper. Warm, Mothering. Care-taker of Gus. Watches out for the kittens, along with Jennyanydots. One of the more prominent vocal roles.

Bombalurina – Mezzo/belter (belts to E5) Female – young adult cat. Strong dancer and tapper. Bombshell, Flirty, Confident. A red queen with an interest in the Rum Tum Tugger.

Demeter – Alto/mezzo (low range to G#3; high range to C#5) Female – young cat. Strong Dancer and tapper. Always on edge. Anxious.

Rumpleteazer – Mezzo (high range up to D5) Young cat) Strong, athletic dancer with preferred tumbling skills. Mischievous prankster and infectious giggler. The naughty but cute juvenile delinquent. Pairs with Mungojerrie.

Sillabub (Jemima) – Mezzo (high range to F5) female- kitten. Sweet , angelic, pure. The kitten who’s the voice of innocence.

Old Deuteronomy (no ens) – High Baritone/Tenor (high range to G#4) Male – older adult cat Must be able to move but strong dance skills not required. Larger framed actor who can play much older. Aged, Wise, Calm, Spiritual. Ancient leader of the tribe. He has authority and dignity and should radiate understanding and warmth.

Rum Tum Tugger – Rock Tenor with a solid falsetto (A4+) Male – young adult cat. Character dancer. Rock star, Cocky, Flirty—sex appeal with a sense of humor. Acting, singing, and swagger outweigh dancing ability.

Munkustrap – Baritone (high range to F#4) Male- young adult cat Excellent singer/actor. Character Dancer. The narrator of the show. Masculine, Serious, courageous, and 2nd in charge. One of the tallest cats/physically imposing. Must be strong enough to fight off McCavity which includes lifting and throwing another male dancer.

Mistoffelees – High Baritone (high range to F4) Young cat. Very strong dancer. A dance showman, magical, mystical, clever, impish.

Gus/Growltiger/Bustopher Jones – Operatic Tenor (high range to A4) Male adult cat. Comedic actor with great character movement. Limited dancing.

Skimbleshanks – High Baritone/Tenor (high range to F4) Good character Dancer. Spunky Character type, Fun-loving, Very animated, lover of punctuality.

Munogjerrie/Ghengis – High Baritone/Tenor (high range to G4) Young cat. Strong, athletic dancer with preferred tumbling skills. Mischievous prankster and infectious giggler. The naughty but cute juvenile delinquent. Pairs with Rumpleteazer.

Victoria- Highly skilled, graceful, agile dancer. Ballet training strongly preferred. Arial skills a plus. Dance skills far outweigh singing abilities.

Macavity/Plato– Spoken vocals. Male adult cat. Strong, versatile dancer. Plays the notorious bad guy and a chorus part.

Alonzo/Rumpus Cat– Baritone. Strong, athletic dancer. Tumbling a plus.

Chorus Cats- Strong dancers with varied vocal ranges

Bill Bailey (Tumblebrutus)- Male kitten

Carbucketty (Pouncival)- Male kitten

Electra and Etcetera- Female kittens

Cassandra- A graceful queen

Tantomile- Female twin to Coricopat

Coricopat- Male twin to Tantomile

Young Chorus Kittens- 8 young dancers/singers from ages 8-14 to fill in as mice, cockroaches, dogs, and Siamese fighters. Strong dance skills a plus but commitment, ability to listen, and enthusiasm most important.
